Heat transfer is a critical issue in almost all engineering systems but current capabilities for passive or active control of thermal transport are essentially limited to the case of convective heat transfer by fluids and gases. In collaboration with a large multi-university group (Paul Braun, Bill King, Gang Chen, Yang Zhao, Shanhui Fan, and Pawel Keblinski) we are studying the basic science of phonon, photon, and electron transport at interfaces between materials with the goal of enabling materials with greater functionality for thermal control.
